IT SUPPORT / REMOTE SUPPORT

Remote Workstation Recovery

A storm-related power loss left a workstation unable to complete startup. Remote troubleshooting had it running again the same morning, with the hardware repair scheduled separately.

PROJECT

A Dell OptiPlex workstation at IrvingBoro Association would not complete its normal startup after a storm-related power outage. It came up with the wrong date and time and would not continue without someone entering the BIOS first. The call came in at 10:53 on a Saturday morning in August 2026. It is the kind of failure that stops a desk from working until someone looks at it, which is what IT support is for.

SCOPE

Remote diagnosis and recovery on a single ticket. Losing the system date and time after a complete power loss meant the machine was not retaining its BIOS configuration — symptoms consistent with a depleted CMOS battery. The client was guided remotely into the Dell BIOS interface, the date and time were corrected, the settings saved, and the workstation restarted and verified back to normal operation.

SUPPORT PROVIDED

A remote IT support engagement rather than a document: diagnosis, guided recovery over a remote session, a written recommendation, and a scheduled follow-up. Because the underlying cause was hardware, an in-person technician visit was booked within two days to replace the CMOS battery, and the client was advised to use sleep mode instead of a full shutdown until then.

OUTCOME

The workstation booted and returned to normal operation, the remote support ticket was documented and closed the same morning, and the corrective hardware repair was scheduled. The failure mode behind that repair is explained in our article on CMOS batteries and BIOS settings.
